Havdalah

(Havdalah, literally 'separation' - a ceremony involving bread, wine and spices which marks the ending of Shabbat)

For us as Nazarene Israelites (followers of Yahshua) or M'aminim Meshichim (Messianic Believers), the Havdalah candle (torch) also reminds us of Yahshua, the Light of the world who takes away the sin of the world. The spices remind us of how the followers of Yahshua took His body down from the tree, wrapped it with spices in strips of linen, and lay it in the tomb. The overflowing Kiddush cup reminds us of the overflowing abundant mercy and goodness of HaShem. He provides more than just enough. We especially remember that Yahshua's lifeblood was indeed poured out for all of us.

As we extinguish the Havdalah light in the wine goblet, we remember that Yahshua laid down His life in His blood that was shed for our redemption. Also, we remember that He took up His light (life) again after three days and three nights in the tomb. Although we say goodbye to one Shabbat, the next one is only seven days away.

Preparing for Havdalah
To perform the Havdalah ceremony, you will need: Before reciting the Havdalah (separation ceremony), place the cup on the plate, and pour the wine or grape juice into the cup. Continue to pour until the wine spills over a bit onto the plate. Have the spice handy. Light the candle (Tehillim 19:9, "The commandment of HaShem is pure, enlightening the eyes") Someone other than the person reciting the Havdalah can hold the candle. The cup is lifted with the right hand and the recitation begins.

The ceremony opens with a blessing

The Blessings of Havdalah

Break the loaf in half, and break off a piece of bread, and lift it up, and recite the scripture(Messianic Applications) John: 6:51  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Break off pieces and hand them to those sitting at the table. After everyone has a piece, recite -  Jn:6:48, Yahshua says " I am that bread of life."

Lift the cup of wine, say this blessing, but don't drink from the cup. Put the cup down. (The wine reminds us of Kiddush)
Baruch atah, Adonai, Elohaynu melech ha'olam, boray pri hagafen.
Blessed are You, YHWH, our Elohim, King of the universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine.  (Messianic Applications)

Mt:26:29: But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. - and thus, our Master will drink this during the Millennial Sabbath, to distinguish the set apart Millennial Sabbath, from the rest of human history.

Lift the spices, say this blessing and sniff the spices.
Baruch atah, Adonai, Elohaynu melech ha'olam, boray minay vesamim.
Blessed are You, YHWH, our Elohim, King of the universe, Creator of the different spices

Look at the candle, say the blessing, raise your hand to the light of the Havdalah candle, then curl your fingers over your palm and look at the light as it is reflected off your fingernails and then at the shadow cast by your fingers across your palm.
Baruch atah, Adonai, Elohaynu melech ha'olam, boray me'oray ha'aysh.
Blessed are You, YHWH, our Elohim, King of the universe, Creator of the fire's lights

(Messianic Applications)

Your torah, Oh Elohim, is our light -Prov:6:23: For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light;  embodied in your very own Son, Yahshua, who is our living LIGHT - Then spake Yahshua again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. - Jn 8:12

Pick up the cup of wine and recite the following blessings.
Baruch atah, Adonai, Elohaynu melech ha'olam, hamavdil
Blessed are You, YHWH, our Elohim, King of the universe, who separates
bayn kodesh lechol
between the set apart and the profane

bayn or lechoshech
between the light and dark
bayn Yisra'el la'amim
between United Yisrael, and other nations
bayn yom ha'shevi'i leshayshet yemay hama'aseh.
between the seventh day, and the six days of the week

Baruch atah, Adonai, hamavdil bayn kodesh lechol.
Blessed are You, YHWH, who separates between the holy and the profane.
Now drink the cup of wine, leaving enough to use to extinguish the flame. As the flame is extinguished, say "Just as the old covenant was ended with the words of our Master, "It is Finished," so do we end this Sabbath and begin a new week even as the renewed covenant is renewed for us."

Omein!
