STUDIES IN JULY 08!

Yom Shabbat July 26th , Location Michigan, Home Shabbat.  1:00pm-5:00pm Parsha 42 Mattot “Tribes” July 26, 2008 23 Tammuz 5768 Num. 30:2(1)*–32:42 Bet Shmuel/2nd Samuel 24, Acts 11  7-26-2008 C.E.Parsha 42 Bam. 30:1 - 32:4230:1-17 Rabbinic teaching speaks of 2 types of vows/neder;1) the first is prohibitive whereby one establishes their own halacha; such as, I will not drink wine for 30 days. Although the Torah permits the drinking of wine, this self prohibiting vow/neder now takes precedence over the Torah's permission to drink wine. Therefore the drinking of wine within the 30 days considered on the same level as breaking a Torah Command.2) The other form of vow/neder is one whereby one obligates themselves to perform an optional command such as a wedding vow/neder.A little background on the word vow from The Blue Letter Bible.vow is Strongs # H5088 (neh-der) meaning: a votive offering. The root of this word is Na-darmeaning; to promise voluntarily. Otherwise; any promise whereby we obligate ourselves. In verse 4 we find the woman making an agreement (RSTN); oath (KJV); this word is Strong's # 632 (es-sar) meaning a binding obligation. From the root (a-sar) meaning to tie; bind; imprison. All of these applications are seriously lacking in modern Israel's concept of marriage, much as it appears to have been in ancient Israel. Also; in these verses we notice that the woman is under the covering of her father or husband; if she is not widowed, or unmarried and her father is dead. Otherwise either one which is her covering has the option of annulling her vows, if done before sunset. (notes courtesy of bro. James)

Yom Shabbat July 19th , Location Michigan Brother James Cramer's Home 1:00pm-5:00pm Parsha 41 Pinchas “Phineas” July 19, 2008 16 Tammuz 5768 Num. 25:10-30:1(29:40)* Bet Shmuel/2nd Samuel 23, Acts 10  7-18-08  Parsha 41 Bamidbar 25:10 - 29:40 26:8 The question was asked as to who was this person Pallu. Verse 6 indicates that he is a 'son' of Rueven. Verse 46 Since the precedent is to name only the sons, why is Sarah mentioned here. Rambam suggests that she is Asher's step daughter by his wife's first marriage, and that her mother was the sole heir of her own father, therefore; like the daughters of Tzslophehad she too received a share of The Land. 27: 1-11 we see the justice of YHWH as HE designates a portion of the inheritance to the daughters of a man who had no sons, thus his inheritance is preserved through his daughters. We also notice in this chapter that when a position of authority is passed on, it is through the laying on of hands, and is done before the priest; (in our time before our High Priest; Yahushua) and the entire congregation. 28: Throughout this chapter we see a great amount of grains being offered. While they are in the wilderness, where is this grain coming from? Is it by means of a miracle? or could it be that when they are in a place long enough, they plant fields, then move on to keep their flocks fed; returning to the fields during the harvest time? Verse 26; While the Feast of First-fruits is designated as a miqra Kodesh, we do not see such a designation for the Wave Offering during Unleavened Bread. 29;7 Just what is this "affliction"? We need to search this out during the upcoming week. Verses 24; 30; 33; all mention the drink offerings in a plural, while 27 mentions it only in the singular. This was true in several differing translations. Wondering if there is any significance to this? Verse 39 questions was; What did these vows consist of? are they vows to offer up something; to perform some duty; or what? Question was also put forward concerning what would be the financial value of all of these offerings? Comment was made that there might be a tally on The Purple Pomegranate website. !! Schmuel 23:39 This is the same Uriyah that King David betrayed. Maaseh Shlichim/ Acts 10:9 Was it a common practice to offer up "noon" prayers Daniel offered up prayers 4 times a day. Probably 9 am; 12 pm; 3 pm; and 6pm. Perhaps this practice was observed by the shlichim. Verse 28 notice it says; "call no man unclean"; no mention of animals here. (notes courtesy of bro. James)
